    What Is Chocolate Mousse?

Chocolate mousse which in french means “foam” is a light and airy rich dessert typically made up of melted chocolate, eggs and heavy cream. It’s very rich, smooth with little to no sweetness. It is the perfect fancy dessert for chocolate lovers!

    Chocolate Mousse Filling

You only need three ingredients to make this best recipe— egg yolks, chocolate, and cream. That’s it. (And no added sugar!)

Chocolate: I like to use high quality baking chocolate. It has a higher cocoa content and less sugar making it the perfect choice for this rich chocolate mousse. If you don’t have baking chocolate you can use dark chocolate or semi sweet chocolate chips.

Egg Yolks: Add a richness and creaminess to the already indulgent chocolate mousse.

Heavy Cream: Half of the cream is warmed in a saucepan and the other half is whipped then folded into the melted chocolate and eggs to create an airy, fluffy texture.

    How To Make Chocolate Mousse

Chocolate mousse is not as intimidating as it seems. There are a couple important steps to follow when making this mousse, such as tempering the eggs before adding in the warm milk (to keep them from scrambling) and gently folding the whipped cream into the chocolate mixture without eliminating all of the air.

Start by whisking the egg yolks on the highest speed until they thicken. Meanwhile, heat 1/2 of the heavy cream in a saucepan. Add a splash of the warm milk to the egg mixture and stir gently. (We are shocking the eggs so they do not scramble).

Next, add the egg mixture with the rest of the milk into the sauce pan and cook until thick.

Add in chocolate and stir until melted. Whip the remaining heavy cream and fold into the chocolate mixture. Refrigerate for 2-3 hours to set.

This recipe makes about 2-4 servings. For me it’s more like two because this stuff is addicting! This mousse is best served chilled but it can be eaten right away if you can’t wait!

Top with homemade whipped cream and shaved chocolate. You can also dust the top of the whipped cream with cocoa powder.

How To Make Homemade Whipped Cream

Add cream and sugar to a stand mixer with the whisk attachment. Whisk until cream forms soft peaks, about 2-3 minutes. Serve on top of mousse if desired.

    Variations & Tips

    • Substitute different types of chocolate. Use dark chocolate to make dark chocolate mousse or substitute white chocolate to make your own white chocolate mousse.
    • Have fun with the toppings! I stuck with classic homemade whipped cream and chocolate shavings, but you could get as creative as you like. Crushed candy bits, cookie crumbles, fresh berries, cocoa powder and mint leaves are other delicious options.
    • Or add a cookie crust to the bottom of your serving glass! Just crush your favorite cookies, like Oreos or graham crackers, and pack them into the bottom of the glass or bowl before adding the mousse.
    • You could also add a swirl of jam, jelly, or peanut butter for more flavor!
    • Add some vanilla, almond or peppermint extract for a hint of flavor.
    • Add a pinch of salt to really bring out the chocolate flavor.
    • To get extra fancy pipe the chocolate mousse into jars for a pretty presentation.
    • You can also use this mousse as a frosting for cakes, cupcakes or pies.

Super decadent 3 Ingredient Chocolate Mousse layered with homemade whipped cream and fresh strawberries. Perfect for Valentine’s day!
Servings: 4 smaller servings or 2 large
Prep Time: 2 hours 15 minutes
    Cook Time: 5 minutes
Total Time: 2 hours 20 minutes

    Ingredients

    3 Ingredient Chocolate Mousse

    • 2 egg yolks
    • 1 cup heavy cream, divided
    • 3 ounces semi-sweet chocolate, I used squares
    • extra whipped for serving, if desired

    Whipped Cream, optional

    Instructions

    • Add egg yolks to a stand mixer with the whisk attachment. On the highest speed whisk yolks until they thicken and are lighter in color, about 3-4 minutes.
    • Meanwhile, in a medium saucepan over medium heat warm up ½ cup heavy cream.
Add a splash of the warm cream to the whisked egg yolks and stir gently. (We are shocking the eggs so they don't get too hot too fast and scramble.)
Add the eggs with the rest of the cream into the saucepan. Cook mixture until thickened, 2 minutes, stir constantly.
    • Take off of the heat and stir in chocolate until melted.
    • Meanwhile, add the remaining ½ cup of heavy cream to the stand mixer with the whisk attachment. Whisk until cream forms soft peaks, 2-3 minutes.
    • Very carefully fold the whipped heavy cream into the chocolate mixture.
Divide the chocolate mousse between two bowls or glasses. You could also make 4 smaller portions if you prefer.
Place in the refrigerator for 2-3 hours to set.
    • Serve with extra whipped cream on top, if desired and shaved chocolate for decoration. Enjoy!

    Optional Whipped Cream Topping

    • Add cream and sugar to a stand mixer with the whisk attachment. Whisk until cream forms soft peaks, about 2-3 minutes. Serve on top of mousse if desired.
