Kelley’s Tips
Before You Get Started
- Allow your wet ingredients to come to room temperature before adding. This helps the dough come together easier and results in a more tender dinner roll.
- Add some fresh herbs! I’ve made these dinner rolls and right after they come out of the oven I’ve brushed them with a homemade herb butter and they are out of this world!
- Add flour as needed: I always add between 3 and 3 1/2 cups depending on the dough. It’s always easier to add flour to a wet dough than the other way around. Start a 3 cups and work your way up.

Notes On Ingredients
- Milk: I use 2% because we always have that on hand. Whole milk could be used as well.
- Yeast: I always use instant yeast however active yeast can be used. The rising time will increase by about 30 minutes.
- Honey: I love the flavor of honey in these rolls. If you don’t have honey you can substitute granulated sugar.
- Egg: Is used to structure the bread as well as help it rise.
- Butter: Adds flavor and makes the rolls soft and fluffy.
- Flour: I use all purpose flour in this recipe however bread flour or whole wheat flour can be used.

How to make The BEST Dinner Rolls
- Make dough: Add the milk and yeast to a stand mixer and stir to combine. Let sit for 5 minutes. Add the honey, egg, butter, salt and 1 cup of the flour. Beat until combined then scrape the sides of the bowl. Add the remaining flour and beat for 2-3 minutes or until the dough is combined and forms a ball. If the dough still looks sticky and is not forming into a ball add more flour. (I start at 3 cups and work my way up to 3 1/2 if needed)

- Rise (1st time): Working with floured hands grab ball of dough and transfer to a large bowl sprayed with nonstick cooking spray or oil. Rotate the ball of dough to coat in the oil. Cover with a towel and place in a warm area to double in size about 90 minutes.

- Divide and shape into rolls: Grease a 9 x 13 pan with nonstick cooking spray, set aside. Once dough has doubled punch it down and roll into 15 balls.

- Rise (2nd time): Place the dough balls in the prepared baking pan and cover to rise for another hour. Brush with egg wash.

- Bake: In a 350 degree oven for 20-25 minutes or until golden brown.

- Serve: Rolls are best served warm brushed with extra butter on top!
- Store: In an airtight container at room temperature for up to 5 days.

Can the rolls be reheated for later !
Kelley Simmons
Hi Bonnie,
Yes you can reheat them after they are cooked or make them ahead of time and bake when you are ready to eat. I would pop leftover rolls in the oven at 350 for 5 minutes or so to heat up.
Thanks!
Jean
They turned out very good. They were moist and fluffy.

It’s funny because the grocery store just notified me that they were out of the rolls I’d ordered and then I came across this post. Freshly baked is better than the ones from the store anyway. Thanks!
