Before you get started / Kelley’s tips

    • Use Greek Yogurt. Greek yogurt adds moisture and helps create a soft, pillowy texture. Make sure it’s full-fat for the best result!
    • Don’t skip the resting time. Letting the dough rest for 15 minutes helps it relax and makes it easier to roll out into smooth rounds.
    • Keep an eye on the naan. Naan bread cooks fast! Keep an eye on it and flip it when you see bubbles forming on the surface.

    Ingredients

    • All-purpose flour: Is used to make the homemade naan bread.
    • Baking powder: Makes the naan bread light and fluffy and helps it to rise.
    • Greek yogurt: Gives the naan moisture and a soft, pillowy texture.
    • Olive oil: Is used to cook the naan bread as well as to brush onto after.
    • Garlic: I LOVE garlic naan! You can leave the naan as is but I love making a garlic oil to brush on top of the naan after it’s cooked. It takes it to another level!
    • Cilantro: Chopped cilantro is the perfect finishing touch of color and flavor.

How to Make Homemade Naan Bread

    1. Mix the Dry Ingredients: In a large bowl add flour, yogurt, baking powder and salt.
    2. Mix the Dough: Mix to form a dough ball, I find mixing with your hands works best.
    1. Cut the Dough: Form into a disc then place on a lightly floured surface. Cut into 8 equal pieces. Let the dough rest for 15 minutes.
    2. Roll the Dough: Roll each dough ball to 1/4 inch thick rounds.
    1. Cook the Naan: Heat 1 tbsp olive oil in a small skillet. Once hot add in naan bread and cook for 1-2 minutes per side. Make sure to keep an eye on it because they cook quickly.
    1. Make the Garlic Oil: In a medium saucepan add the olive oil and garlic. Cook over medium high heat until the garlic is golden brown. Remove from heat then brush on top of the naan bread. Sprinkle with kosher salt and fresh cilantro and enjoy!

    Serving Suggestions

This homemade naan bread is a fantastic accompaniment for a variety of dishes! It pairs perfectly with curries, whether it’s a rich butter chicken or spicy tikka masala For something vegetarian try a chickpea curry or vegetable curry. And if you’re in the mood for something a bit different, try it with tandoori chicken or butter chicken meatballs. Of course, you can’t forget to include a side of curry fried rice or turmeric rice.

A drizzle of yogurt or a side of mint chutney would also add a cool, refreshing contrast to the warm, fluffy naan.

    Frequently Asked Questions

Can I make naan without Greek yogurt?

Yes, if you don’t have Greek yogurt, you can substitute it with regular yogurt or even sour cream. The texture may vary slightly, but it will still yield a delicious result.

Can I make the dough ahead of time?

Absolutely! You can prepare the dough ahead of time and store it in the fridge for up to 24 hours. Just let it come to room temperature before rolling it out and cooking.

How can I store leftover naan?

Leftover naan can be stored in an airtight container or wrapped in foil at room temperature for 1-2 days. For longer storage, wrap it tightly in plastic wrap and freeze for up to 3 months. Reheat in a hot skillet or oven.
