Air Fryer Chickpeas
What would you say if I told you that all you needed to make a delicious, savory, crunchy snack at home was just a couple of ingredients you probably have on-hand right now? What if I told you this snack is also gluten-free and Whole30-approved?
It’s true! These crispy air fryer chickpeas taste as good as they are good for you! Made with just olive oil and a handful of dry spices, you can make your own healthy snack in 15 minutes or less all in your air fryer. Minimal mess and minimal cleanup!
Chickpeas are a great guilt free snack that is loaded with fiber and protein. You still get the crunch your craving without the extra calories. Plus cooking chickpeas in the air fryer take about half of the time as they do in the oven.
I’ve included two recipes for my two favorite seasonings for these air fryer roasted chickpeas — curry-spiced seasoning and paprika-spiced seasoning. You can’t go wrong with either! Enjoy on their own a a snack or use them as a crispy garnish for soups and salads.
Ingredients For Air Fryer Chickpeas
- Chickpeas: Also referred to as garbanzo beans, is the same canned vegetable used to make hummus. It’s delicious on its own when roasted or air fried to make a crunchy snack! Make sure to rinse and dry the chickpeas thoughrouly before using. See my tip below about saving the liquid!
- Oil: I used olive oil, but you could also use ghee or avocado oil. Not only does this impart some flavor, but it keeps the chickpeas from sticking and burning in the air fryer.
- Dry Seasonings: The best thing about these air fryer chickpeas is that they instantly take on whatever you season them with. I used paprika and curry, but you can use any pre-made or individual spices you like. Taco, cinnamon sugar, cajun or ranch seasoning would also be delicious!
What Is Aquafaba? (Don’t Toss the Liquid!)
Don’t throw out the liquid from the canned chickpeas! Aquafaba (the liquid that comes in the can of chickpeas) makes a great substitute for eggs in vegan baked good recipes. It also makes a fun sensory activity for the kids!
I learned this hack from a fellow blogger and I do this every time I make something with chickpeas.
Drain your chickpeas and transfer the liquid to a stand mixer with the whisk attachment. Whip the liquid for 3-4 minutes or until the mixture is lighter in color and thickened (think whipped cream texture.) That’s it! Let the kids play with the foam. I give my daughter toys to hid in the foam and dig out as well as spoons and cups to transfer the foam back and forth. You can even add in sprinkles or food coloring as well!
How To Roast Chickpeas In The Air Fryer
- Preheat air fryer to 400 degrees. Spray the rack insert of the air fryer with nonstick cooking spray.
- Spread drained and rinsed chickpeas on a kitchen towel to dry completely. (This helps to crisp up the chickpeas and helps the seasonings stick better).
- Add the chickpeas, oil and either the curry spices or paprika spice blend to a medium bowl and toss to coat.
- Add the chickpeas to the preheated air fryer and cook for 10-15 or until your desired crispness. I like to toss the chickpeas about half way through cooking.
- Serve and enjoy!
Paprika-Spiced vs. Curry-Spiced Chickpeas
To make the paprika-spiced version of these air fryer chickpeas, simply toss the roasted garbanzo beans with salt, onion powder, garlic powder, and smoked paprika
For the curry-spiced version of these air fryer, toss them with all of the above mentioned ingredients, but instead of paprika use curry powder. Simple!
