before you get started / kelley’s tips

  • Use Day-Old Bread: Slightly stale French bread absorbs the eggnog mixture better, creating a rich and custardy texture. If your bread is fresh, cube it and let it sit out for a few hours or lightly toast it in the oven.
  • Prep Ahead: If you’re making this casserole for Christmas morning, assemble it the night before, cover it tightly, and store it in the fridge. This allows the bread to soak up all that eggnog goodness, and it makes it easier to get breakfast on the table in the morning!
  • Serve with Toppings: Serve the casserole warm with a drizzle of maple syrup, powdered sugar, or even a dollop of whipped cream for a decadent holiday treat!

    ingredients needed

    • French Bread: I use a loaf of French bread cubed into bite-sized pieces. Brioche or challah bread also works wonderfully for a slightly sweeter casserole.
    • Eggs: Eggs create the base of the custard. You can also use an egg substitute or egg whites for a lighter option, although this may affect the consistency and texture of the casserole (i.e. it may not hold together as well.)
    • Eggnog: Traditional eggnog gives this dish its festive flavor. You can use dairy-free eggnog or half-and-half with a pinch of nutmeg if needed.
    • Cinnamon: Adds warmth and spice.
    • Vanilla: Enhances the sweetness and flavor.
    • All-Purpose Flour: Used in the streusel topping.
    • Light Brown Sugar: Adds sweetness to the streusel. Dark brown sugar works, too, for a richer flavor.
    • Unsalted Butter: Melted butter binds the streusel ingredients together and gives it a nice buttery flavor. Salted butter can also be used.

    3. Coat the bread: Toss to fully coat the bread in the custard.

    serving suggestions

    • Maple Syrup: A drizzle of warm maple syrup adds the perfect touch of sweetness and complements the eggnog flavor.
    • Whipped Cream: Top with a dollop of whipped cream for an indulgent, dessert-like breakfast.
    • Powdered Sugar: A light dusting of powdered sugar gives it a beautiful, festive finish.
    • Fresh Berries: Add a pop of color and sweet-tart flavor with fresh strawberries, raspberries, or blueberries.
    • Chopped Nuts: Sprinkle chopped pecans or walnuts for a bit of crunch and a nutty flavor.
    • Caramel or Butterscotch Sauce: For an extra decadent twist, drizzle with warm caramel or butterscotch sauce.
