I have a HUGE weakness for brownies. They are one of my all-time favorite desserts. I took my recipe for The Best Chocolate Brownies and stepped them up a notch. I added a rich and creamy peanut butter frosting to these chocolate peanut butter brownies, with a drizzle of melted chocolate to top them off. They are the BEST Peanut Butter Chocolate Brownies!
This Chocolate Peanut Butter Brownie recipe is so rich and dense with the perfect amount of chewiness. These peanut butter brownies use less flour which helps with the chewiness and substitutes some brown sugar for extra moisture.
I also added instant coffee granules to bring out the cocoa flavor in the brownies. But my best tip for making brownies is browning the butter! It adds so much flavor and extra nuttiness to the brownies.
The brownie base for these ooey gooey peanut butter chocolate brownies is super easy to make. Simply brown the butter, stir in sugars, baking powder, cocoa, and salt. Allow to sit for 5 minutes then fold in the rest of the ingredients. That’s it!
As for the peanut butter frosting, I whip that up while the brownies are cooling. I cream butter and peanut butter together in a stand mixer then add in powdered sugar, milk, and vanilla.

INGREDIENTS
The full ingredient list and measurements are listed in the printable recipe below.
Brownies with Peanut Butter Frosting
- Cocoa Powder: I used unsweetened cocoa powder to give these brownies the chocolatey taste we all love!
- Sugar: This recipe uses both granulated sugar and brown sugar. The granulated sugar is purely for added sweetness, and the brown sugar adds a delicious caramel undertone to the brownies.
- Butter: Brownies need butter to turn the richness and flavor up 100%!
- Instant coffee granules: Instant coffee helps to bring out the flavor of the chocolate. It’s one of my favorite tips for making the best brownies!
- Chocolate chunks or chocolate chips: Because you can never have too much chocolate! The chunks in these Peanut Butter Chocolate Chip Brownies add an extra layer of texture and chocolatiness. They are AMAZING!
Peanut Butter Frosting
- Butter: Butter adds even more richness and creaminess to the peanut butter frosting.
- Peanut butter: One of my favorite things in life! I used creamy peanut butter but you could always switch it out for crunchy.
- Powdered sugar: The much-needed sweetness for any icing recipe! Powdered sugar is used instead of granulated as it’s much easier to make into a smooth paste.
- Milk: Not too much milk! It also adds creaminess, plus makes mixing the frosting much easier.
Chocolate Drizzle
- Semi-sweet chocolate chips: The chocolate drizzle couldn’t be easier. It’s literally just melted chocolate chips! I used semi-sweet but feel free to use milk, dark or bittersweet chocolate.
How to make the BEST Brownies with Peanut Butter Frosting
Make the Brownies
Prep the pan and oven: Firstly, preheat the oven to 350ºF, and then line a 9 x 9 or 8 x 8 pan with aluminum foil or parchment paper. Lightly spray with cooking spray or grease with butter. Set aside.
Make the brownies: Add butter to a medium saucepan and cook over medium heat until light brown/caramel in color. 5-10 minutes. Make sure to keep an eye on it so the butter does not burn. It also helps to use a light-colored saucepan for this. Next, pour browned butter into a large bowl along with both sugars, cocoa powder, salt, instant coffee granules, and baking powder. Stir until combined and allow to rest for 5 minutes or until the mixture has cooled down.
Add the wet ingredients, flour, and extra chocolate: Stir in the eggs and vanilla and mix until batter has a nice sheen to it. Fold in the flour and chocolate chunks or chips and stir until combined. (Do not over mix)
Pour & Bake: Pour the batter into the prepared pan and bake for 20-25 minutes or until the top is set and a toothpick comes out clean.
Cool & frost: Cool completely and lift out the aluminum foil or parchment paper. When the brownies are cooled, frost with peanut butter frosting and drizzle with melted chocolate. Cut into 9 brownies and serve.
How to make Peanut Butter Frosting & the chocolate drizzle
- Cream the butter and peanut butter: In a stand mixer with the paddle attachment cream butter and peanut butter until light and fluffy, 2-3 minutes.
- Mix in the rest of the ingredients: Add in powdered sugar, milk, and vanilla and mix until smooth and lump-free.
- Make the chocolate drizzle: Melt chocolate in a small saucepan or in the microwave in 15-second intervals until melted.
- Pour & pipe: Pour the chocolate into a small ziplock bag and cut a small snip in the corner off the bag. After the brownies have been frosted, pipe the drizzle over them in a zigzag pattern.
Can I add anything else to these peanut butter frosted brownies?
Yes! They’re great as they are, but here as a few more additions to make these brownies even better:
- Walnuts
- Roasted peanuts
- Slivered almonds
- Macadamia nuts
- Pecans
- Hazelnuts
Storage & Freezing Chocolate Peanut Butter Brownies
- Store: In an airtight container in the refrigerator or on the counter for up to 4 days.
- Freezing: Freeze these brownies without the peanut butter frosting for up to 3 months in the freezer. When you’re ready to eat them, thaw them overnight in the refrigerator, frost, drizzle, and serve!

You simply can’t go wrong with PB and chocolate combo!!
Ann
This made a lot more frosting than I was expecting for a 9×9 pan of brownies. We had lots left over. I also found as written it’s pretty dry.
Kelley
Hi Ann,
I am so sorry to hear you found the frosting dry. Maybe next time try a bit less powdered sugar?
Thanks for the feedback!

Chocolate is a favorite of mine, so I’m definitely going to make this!
Katherine murphy
Hi. I must be missing something —what do you use the 1\2 chocolate chunks for? Do you add them to the batter?
Thanks
Kathy
Kelley
Hi Katherine,
Sorry about the confusion. You add the chocolate chunks when you add the flour. I have updated the recipe to include this instruction.
Thanks so much for pointing it out to me!

Do you need to refrigerate?
Kelley
Hi CJ,
I like to refrigerate mine. But these can be left at room temperature for 1-2 days as well.
Thanks & Enjoy!

Should I use semi sweet or milk chocolate chunks/chips?
Nathan
Semi-sweet work best in this recipe.
I hope you enjoy!

Hey do you need to use coffee … I don’t have any ?
Nathan
It will still be good without the coffee! I hope you enjoy!

Very chocolatey! I found the cocoa powder comes out to much and could use less. On the other hand, the frosting is amazing! Wonderfully delicious, but it makes a ton! I Have way to much I don’t know what to do with.

When I was mixing up these brownies I had my doubts as to how well they would turn out. The batter was SO thick and hard to spread in the pan. I baked mine in an 8×8 pan for 22 minutes. Let them cool completely and cut into them. Wow, was I in for a delightful surprise! These are like bakery brownies: chewy, dense, and super chocolaty! I also made the PB frosting, unsure how that would turn out, and I must say that is the smoothest, creamiest PB frosting I’ve ever had! And putting the frosting over the brownies just sent them over the top taste-wise! Made these for a dinner party and my guests were wowed as well! Thank you so much for this outstanding brownie recipe!!
