The Best Drop Biscuits Recipe
Making homemade biscuits has never been easier!! This 5 ingredient drop biscuits recipe uses pantry staples to create a fluffy, buttery biscuit in no time.
While these biscuits have a more rustic look than classic biscuits, they are just as delicious and a wonderful option to serve as breakfast, brunch, or complement a full meal! Especially if you are feeding a crowd, these easy biscuits are a must-try. No patting, rolling, or cutting required!
If you are like me and never have buttermilk on hand, then I even have a handy buttermilk replacement here to keep things simple! Or, you can replace the buttermilk with regular milk instead. Let’s get baking!
Ingredients Needed
- All Purpose Flour: Regular flour works great here. However, if you need to make gluten-free drop biscuits, use a gluten-free replacement flour that has a 1 to 1 ratio to flour.
- Baking Powder: To help give the biscuits a little rise!
- Salt: For added flavor.
- Butter: Cold butter is essential here and results in those fluffy layers!
- Buttermilk: If you have buttermilk on hand, use it. Otherwise, you can combine regular milk with 1 tablespoon of white vinegar to make a homemade buttermilk replacement! Or, simply use regular milk instead.
how to make buttermilk
If you don’t have buttermilk on hand, don’t worry! Simply combine 1 cup of milk (any kind) with 1 tablespoon of white vinegar and let it sit for 5 minutes before using.
How to Make 5 Ingredient Drop Biscuits
- Measure Dry Ingredients: Add flour, baking powder and salt to a large bowl, mix to combine.
- Add in Butter: Add in cubed butter and using a fork or a pastry cutter, cut the butter into the flour. The goal is to mix the cold butter with the flour. It will end up looking like pebbles/coarse meal.
- Add Buttermilk: Pour in the buttermilk and mix just until the dough comes together. Make sure not to over mix!
- Drop on Baking Sheet: Drop 2 tbsp (1 ounce) sized mounds onto the prepared baking sheet. I got 12 medium size biscuits, however, feel free to make yours smaller or bigger.
- Bake: Place in the oven and bake for 12-14 minutes or until the biscuits are golden brown.
- Remove & Cool: Remove from the oven and let rest on the baking sheet for 5 minutes before removing to cool completely.
Tips & tricks
- If you don’t have a pastry cutter, use your fingers to break apart the cold cubes of butter! Once the butter is in the bowl with the dry ingredients, use a snapping motion with the butter in between your fingers to break it up into small pieces of butter. Once most of the butter is pea sized, you are good to continue!
- Use cold ingredients! The key to making flaky, soft biscuits is to use cold ingredients. The butter will evaporate in the oven releasing steam, creating air in the biscuits that keeps them flaky instead of dense!
Serving Suggestions
Serve your 5 ingredient drop biscuits with jam, lemon curd, butter or clotted cream! For a larger meal, they go amazingly with soups or stews. Try serving them with some of my personal favorites like:
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the difference between drop biscuits and regular biscuits?
The main different between drop biscuits and regular biscuits is the effort put forth into making them. The dough is the same, but for regular biscuits, you must fold the dough to create layers, and then use a biscuit cutter to cut out the round biscuits. Drop biscuits are just onto the sheet pan and baked!
How should I store leftover drop biscuits?
Store any leftover drop biscuits in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 2 days! After 2 days pop these in the freezer for up to 3 months to preserve their flavor and texture!
