Yes you can make Wonton Soup at home! All you need is a couple ingredients for a flavorful broth! The homemade pork dumpling are made with ground pork, ginger, garlic, soy sauce and sesame oil! This wonton soup tastes just like the restaurant version!
Before you get started / Kelley’s tips
- Seal the wontons carefully. Make sure to seal the wontons tightly to prevent the filling from spilling out while they cook. Use a little water around the edges of the wrappers to help the edges stick together.
- Don’t overfill the wrappers. Stick to about 1 teaspoon of filling per wrapper. Too much filling can make the wontons harder to seal and may cause them to burst during cooking.
- Keep the wrappers covered. Wonton wrappers dry out quickly, so keep them covered with a damp paper towel while assembling to prevent them from cracking.

Ingredients Needed
- Ground Pork: The base for the wonton filling, ground pork adds richness and flavor while staying tender.
- Ginger and Garlic: Adds so much flavor to the pork filling and the broth!
- Soy Sauce: Provides a salty, umami depth.
- Sesame Oil: Adds a nutty, aromatic quality.
- Rice Vinegar: Adds a touch of tanginess that balances the richness of the pork and enhances the soup’s flavor.
- Green Onions: Adds a mild, fresh onion flavor and a pop of color to the filling.
- Wonton Wrappers: Used to enclose the pork filling, creating perfectly tender dumplings.
- Low-Sodium Chicken Broth: A light and flavorful base for the soup.
How To Make Homemade Wonton Soup
- Make the Broth: Add broth, sliced ginger, garlic, sesame oil, soy sauce, and rice vinegar to a large pot. Bring to a simmer and cook for 15 minutes while you are assembling your wontons.
- Make the Filling: Add ground pork, ginger, garlic, soy sauce, sesame oil, rice vinegar, and green onions to a large bowl. Stir until everything is combined.
- Assemble Wontons: Lay out wonton wrappers on a dry work surface. Place 1 tsp of the pork mixture into the center of each wrapper. Using your fingers, brush water on all four sides of the wrapper. (This helps it to stick)
- Fold the Wontons: Fold the wonton in half and pinch it closed, then bring the 2 bottom sides together. I like to wet the two bottom points before touching them together to make sure they stick properly. Repeat with the remaining wontons.
- Cook the Wontons and Serve: Add the wontons to the soup and cook for 4-5 minutes. Serve immediately with green onions on top for garnish!
Recipe Variations
- Shrimp: Replace the ground pork with finely chopped shrimp or a combination of shrimp and pork for a seafood twist.
- Chicken & Veggie: Use ground chicken mixed with finely chopped water chestnuts, mushrooms, or spinach for added texture and flavor.
- Spicy: Add a pinch of red chili flakes or a drizzle of sriracha to the filling for some heat.
- Noodles: Add cooked rice noodles or egg noodles to turn the soup into a heartier meal.
- Veggies: Add veggies to the broth like bok choy, napa cabbage, baby spinach, or sliced mushrooms for extra nutrients and texture.
- Egg Drop: Drizzle in a beaten egg while the broth is simmering to create delicate egg ribbons.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I make the wontons ahead of time?
Yes! Assemble the wontons and freeze them in a single layer on a baking sheet. Once frozen, transfer them to a freezer bag. Cook directly from frozen—just add 1-2 minutes to the cooking time.
How do I store leftovers?
Store leftover soup in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 3 days. Keep wontons and broth separate to prevent them from becoming soggy. Reheat the broth and wontons together before serving.
Can I add extra ingredients to the broth?
Definitely! Feel free to customize the broth with bok choy, sliced mushrooms, carrots, or even a soft-boiled egg for added texture and flavor.
