The Best Coleslaw Recipe
My best and easy coleslaw recipe is perfect for just about any occasion! A holiday barbecue, weeknight dinner, or easy to-go lunch. It is packed with nutritious, crunchy vegetables that are coated in a homemade creamy dressing to bring the whole thing together. It has the perfect balance of tangy, sweet and creamy flavors.
Coleslaw is one of those side dishes that will always come in handy. It goes with just about anything and balances out those savory dishes with some tangy, fresh goodness!
This is a basic coleslaw recipe, however, I knew I needed to share it here since it is such a staple recipe that me and my family absolutely love!
Ingredients Needed
- Cabbage: I like to use a combination of red cabbage and green cabbage here! It adds a variety of texture and nutrients. Freshly chopped cabbage has a crunchier texture than bagged coleslaw mix!
- Carrots: I always prefer freshly grated carrots, but you can also use pre-shredded carrots.
- Scallions: Add a mild onion flavor without being too overpowering!
- Salt & Pepper: To taste.
- Homemade Dressing: To make a homemade coleslaw dressing, mix together mayo, vinegar, dijon mustard, honey, celery seed, onion powder and garlic powder!
How to make The best coleslaw
- Combine Veggies: Add both cabbages, carrots and scallions to a large bowl.
- Make the Dressing: Add mayo, vinegar, mustard, honey, celery seed, onions powder and garlic powder to a small bowl. Whisk to combine.
- Combine: Pour the dressing onto the coleslaw and toss until everything is coated in the dressing. Season with salt and pepper to taste.
- Serve: Serve immediately or refrigerate until ready to serve.
Serving Suggestions
You can serve coleslaw in so many different ways! You can serve it as a side dish with your favorite proteins like barbecue ribs, my best grilled chicken, or air fryer salmon. It also goes amazingly on top of barbacoa beef tacos, chicken fajitas, or pollo asado!
If you are looking for some more side dishes to go with it that’ll make it a heartier meal, try pairing it with watermelon salad or a simple fruit salad along with some savory options like three cheese mac and cheese and potato salad!
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the easiest way to shred cabbage?
You can shred your cabbage in one of two ways. If you have one, you can use a mandolin for very thin pieces! Otherwise, simply use a sharp chef’s knife to slice the cabbage into thin pieces.
Can I use pre-shredded coleslaw mix?
Absolutely! If you prefer to skip all the chopping, you can use pre-shredded bagged coleslaw mix instead. Just make sure that it amounts to about 6 cups worth of veggies so that you have the same dressing to coleslaw ratio!
Why is my coleslaw watery?
As your coleslaw sits, the dressing will start to draw out the water that is in the cabbage, leaving it a bit watery. If you prefer not to have watery coleslaw, serve this easy coleslaw recipe as soon as you make it! Otherwise, you can refrigerate it for a bit before serving.
