    Homemade Southern Peach Cobbler

Southern-style peach cobbler is a staple for summertime! It features juicy, sweet peaches and a cakey crust that’s crispy on the outside and soft on the inside. Pair it with a scoop of vanilla ice cream for summer dessert perfection!

This recipe is similar to my Texas-Style Blueberry Cobbler where you pour the cobbler batter in the prepared baking dish first, and then top it with a syrupy peach and sugar mixture. The peaches sink during the baking process while the cake rises, so they essentially swap places. But during that switch, the flavors permeate through both layers, meaning you get delicious peach flavor in every bite.

    Peach Cobbler Ingredients

This homemade peach cobbler is a staple dessert in my kitchen because it only requires a handful of ingredients! To make it, you’ll need: unsalted butter, granulated sugar, all-purpose flour, baking powder, salt, milk (dairy- or plant-based will work), pure vanilla extract, and sliced peaches (fresh, if possible).

    How To Make Peach Cobbler

    1. Prep: Preheat oven: Grease your baking dish by placing 4 tablespoons of butter into a 9 x 13 pan. Place in the oven to melt while it preheats to 350 degrees. This gives you time to assemble the cobbler batter and peaches before adding them to the hot pan.
    2. Brown the Butter: Add 1/2 cup butter to a small saucepan and cook over medium heat until light brown / caramel in color. 5-10 minutes. Make sure to keep and eye on it so butter does not burn. It also helps to use a light colored saucepan for this. Set aside to cool.

    1. Prepare the Peach Filling: In a medium bowl combine peaches and 1/4 cup sugar. Set aside while you make the cobbler batter so the peaches can macerate, which is when the sugar draws out the juices from the fruit.
    2. Make the Cobbler Batter: In a large bowl combine flour, baking powder and salt. Add the milk, 1 1/4 cups of sugar, vanilla and melted butter into the flour mixture and mix until smooth.

    1. Assemble the Cobbler: Pour batter into the prepared baking dish. Top with peaches by dropping spoonfuls of the peach mixture on top of the batter. Sprinkle 2 tbsp sugar on top, and bake until golden brown and edges are crisp (about 40 to 50 minutes).

    Tips and Variations

    • If using frozen peaches, make sure to thaw and measure them after they have been thawed. (I’ve measured frozen fruit versus thawed, and always get about 1 cup less after the fruit have been thawed.)
    • Use your favorite fruit instead! This all purpose cobbler works great with any type of fruit. Strawberries, peaches, blackberries, or nectarines would be delicious.
    • Or do a mixture of fruits! My favorite combinations are peach blueberry cobbler or mixed berry cobbler. YUM!
    • Add some cinnamon and/or nutmeg for that classic peach pie flavor.
    • Drizzle with some homemade caramel sauce before serving.

    Storage, Reheating and Freezing Instructions

    • Store leftover peach cobbler in airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 5 days.
    • Reheat leftovers in the microwave or reheat the whole casserole covered in foil in a 350 degree oven until warmed through 15-20 minutes.
    • Freeze baked and cooled cobbler for up to 3 months. Just make sure to wrap it really good in foil, and then store in an airtight container.
