What’s To Love About Mojitos?
Mojitos are hands down my all time favorite drink. They are so refreshing, light, and sweet; perfect for sipping year-round! I’ve made a holiday version with Cranberry and Pomegranate and a Classic Mint Mojito, but now it’s time for this sweet and tart Blood Orange Mojito!
When citrus like blood oranges are in season, they’re packed with antioxidants and rich in fiber.
This blood orange mojito recipe is tart from the fresh lime juice and orange and sweet from the simple syrup. Super refreshing and loaded with citrus flavor. The blood orange gives the mojito a beautiful pink hue. If blood oranges are out of season, then cara cara oranges can be substituted.
Of course, these blood orange mojitos are perfect for spring and summer when it’s hot and you could use a fruity, refreshing cocktail to cool down, but you can honestly make it any time of the year! If I ever need a winter pick-me-up (aka sunshine in a glass), I make this cocktail.
Serve the Mixed Berry Margarita with my Homemade Tortilla Chips and Healthy Greek Yogurt Guacamole as a bright and festive cocktail hour before your main course!
Key Ingredients
You only need six ingredients to make these easy homemade mojitos!
- 8 sprigs of fresh mint
- 1 ounce lime juice
- 1 ounce blood orange juice
- 1 tablespoon simple syrup (aka equal parts sugar and water, warmed until combined)
- 2 ounces sparkling water (or your favorite lemon-lime soda)
- 1 ounce light rum
- Optional blood orange zest curls for garnish
How to Make This Mojito
This cocktail takes less than 5 minutes to make! Simply, muddle the mint and the lime juice together in a glass. Top with rum, blood orange juice and simple syrup. Top with the sparkling water and enjoy! I love to garnish the glasses with wedges of blood orange or curls of the orange zest, if I’m feeling fancy.
To get the most juice out of your citrus, first roll it on a hard surface (like your kitchen counter) with the heel of your hand a few times. This loosens up the pockets of juice inside of the fruit, producing the most juice when you squeeze it.
How To Make Simple Syrup
I took a short cut this time and used pre-made simple syrup. However, you can easily make your own simple syrup at home by simply boiling equal parts sugar and water, and cook until the sugar dissolves. Allow to cool, and then add it to your mojito.
Storage and Freezing Instructions
You could make a big batch of the simple syrup and either keep it refrigerated for up to 3 weeks or freeze it to use later as needed. Otherwise, make the rest of the cocktail fresh as needed.
