The Best Grilled Sweet Potato Wedges Recipe
These easy Grilled Sweet Potato Wedges make the perfect side dish to any summer meal! Caramelized and crispy on the outside and light and fluffy on the inside. Cooking the sweet potatoes on the grill gives the outside a nice smoky char and adds so much flavor! Plus you don’t have to turn on the oven. I love serving these sweet potato fries with burgers for an easy summertime meal! Plus it’s whole 30 complaint and naturally gluten free!
The best part is you will be eating these fries in less than 30 minutes, start to finish! All you need for this recipe is 4 ingredients! Here’s what you’ll need:
Ingredients Needed
- Sweet Potatoes: Opt for about one sweet potato per person. Leaving the skin on adds extra fiber and texture, plus it helps the wedges hold their shape during grilling!
- Extra Virgin Olive Oil: Olive oil helps the seasoning adhere to the sweet potatoes and enhances the overall flavor.
- Garlic Powder & Onion Powder: Adds a savory depth of flavor that balances the sweetness of the potatoes. It’s a great way to infuse flavor evenly throughout the wedges!
How to make Grilled Sweet Potato Wedges
- Boil water: Bring a large pot of salted water to a boil.
- Simmer the Wedges: Carefully add in sweet potato wedges and cook until fork tender, about 6 minutes.
- Season: Drain the water then add in the olive oil, garlic powder, onion powder, salt and pepper to the same pot. Toss to coat.
- Prep Grill: Heat the grill to medium heat and spray with non stick cooking spray.
- Grill the Wedges: Cook the potatoes until crispy on the outside, 2-3 minutes per side.
- Serve: Remove and serve immediately with ketchup or homemade ranch dressing!
Tips for Success
- Don’t Skip the Parboil: Parboiling the sweet potato wedges before grilling ensures they’re cooked through and tender inside while still achieving that perfect crispy exterior.
- Evenly Cut Wedges: Try to cut your sweet potato wedges as evenly as possible! This ensures they cook at the same rate, preventing some wedges from burning while others are undercooked.
- Grill Temperature: Keep your grill at medium heat. Too high, and the potatoes might burn before they’re fully cooked. Too low, and they won’t develop that nice, crispy char.
Recipe Variations
- Serve with lot’s of sauces to dip in: I love to serve these Sweet Potato Fries with Spicy Ketchup, Homemade Ranch Dressing or Honey Mustard for dipping!
- For a sweet twist: For a fun twist omit the garlic and onion powder and sprinkle the potato wedges with cinnamon and sugar when they come off the grill.
- Add some herbs: These wedges are also delicious topped with fresh parsley and parmesan cheese!
- Add some seasonings: Try tossing these fries in some of your favorite seasonings. I like to do Cajun seasoning, Italian seasoning and Taco seasoning!
